Teeth Whitening

Healthy teeth that have yellowed with age or stained from coffee, red wine or smoking usually respond well to whitening. The solution is professional tooth whitening from an experienced cosmetic dentist.

At NW Smiles, we use ZOOM ADVANCED POWER (ZAP) to offer whiter teeth in less than an hour. This in-surgery professional tooth whitening system is a revolutionary procedure. It’s ideal for anyone looking for immediate results. The convenience of Zoom! makes it the perfect choice for the busy individual. Whiter teeth can take years off your appearance and with proper care your smile will sparkle for years. Take your first step to feeling good, looking great and making a memorable impression every time you smile with Zoom!

Zoom! In-Surgery Power Whitening

The procedure is simple, it begins with a short preparation to cover your lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed. The dentist will then apply the Zoom! whitening gel, which was designed to be used with a specially designed light.

The Zoom! light and gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up stains and discoloration. All professional tooth whitening products are based on a hydrogen peroxide solution. Extensive research and studies show that Zoom! under dental supervision is completely safe.

Home Whitening

Tray based whitening is also available. Gel is placed in a custom-made transparent tray which can be worn overnight (Nite White) or one hour/day (Day White) for a total of 10 – 14 days.

The Zoom! take-home kit uses a breakthrough dual barrel chemistry that is engineered to accelerate whitening efficacy in two unique ways. First it uses a breakthrough surfactant which improves gel penetration, and the second feature is it helps to control the activation of Hydrogen Peroxide. This innovative system helps to control the release of free radicals for optimal results. Studies show that the Zoom! take home kit delivers an average of six shades after three applications (Individual results may vary and these results are based on overnight wear).

BriteSmile To Go Brightening Pens

BriteSmile To Go can be used day or night and requires no waiting after application. Remove cap, click the pen and apply a thin layer onto the front surface of the teeth. Replace cap when your finished, it’s that simple!

It’s the easy way to dramatically brighten your teeth at work, at home or on the go.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin layers of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of teeth (like a false fingernail fits over a nail). Porcelain Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy, and are a common form of cosmetic dentistry.

They are very thin and are glued onto teeth using a tooth ‘superglue’. Once bonded, it is a very strong bond, hence, tooth preparation for veneers can be kept minimal.

Porcelain Veneers improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth (straighten your teeth). They are available in many shades, hence, you can have a beautiful natural smile or go for a ‘hollywood’ bright white smile. This stage will be discussed with your dentist and possibly the dental technician, to ensure you leave with a beautiful smile.

The benefits of veneers are:

  • They greatly improve your appearance, hiding any imperfections (like chips) and you lose very little natural tooth.
  • Veneers protect teeth from any more damage. For example, acid in foods and drinks or from the stomach can cause your teeth to wear away. The teeth become thin and weak in these situations, veneers will protect them.
  • If the tooth is strong, a veneer is often a better option than a crown for improving a tooth’s appearance.

    Cosmetic Bonding & Tooth Contouring

Cosmetic Bonding is a process in which a natural coloured composite material is applied to a tooth’s surface. It can be used to restore minor chips, close small gaps and cover white marks (fluorosis), often completed in one appointment.

At NW Smiles we use the latest materials and techniques. This allows excellent matching to the shade and translucency of your teeth.

The materials used are bonded to your tooth with dental “glue” and this is all set with an ultra violet light. Once the tooth has been built up, sandpaper discs are used to shape the bonded material into a natural and aesthetically pleasing shape. In most situations, Cosmetic Bonding can be completed without the need for anesthetic!

Cosmetic tooth contouring is a quick and simple way to reshape and tidy your smile. It works well to smooth minor chips, reshape ‘fang-like’ teeth and redefine teeth which look worn.

There is minimal discomfort during a tooth contouring procedure. It is a simple technique; however the smallest changes can make a big difference. When contouring is combined with tooth whitening it really rejuvenates your smile.

      Cosmetic Orthodontics

This is when appliances are used to move and straighten teeth but the braces are NOT visible. This is a very important factor in adulthood when nobody wants to be seen with ‘railway tracks’.

Cosmetic orthodontics falls into two categories. The first is Lingual-Brackets, these are fixed behind or on the backs of teeth, but they work like ordinary brackets. The brackets are stuck to the teeth with a special type of glue which can be easily removed after completion of your orthodontic treatment. Due to this being a fixed appliance, it is possible to achieve straighter teeth in a shorter period of time.

The second option is Invisalign. Again these are invisible, so no one can tell you are straightening your teeth. The main difference with the option above is they are removable, so you can eat and drink comfortably and oral hygiene (flossing and brushing) is easy. This treatment is based on wearing a series of custom-made trays called aligners. Each aligner is worn for about 2 weeks, moving your teeth gradually, week by week, millimetre by millimetre, until you have achieved the intended result- straighter teeth.

          FAQs about professional tooth whitening

          What is Zoom! tooth whitening?

Zoom! is a bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentine.

          What causes tooth discoloration?

There are many causes. Commonest causes are aging and lifestyle. Lifestyle includes consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc. Discoloration can also be caused by use of tetracycline antibiotic/excessive fluoride during tooth formation stage.

Who may benefit from professional tooth whitening?

Almost anyone. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. A consultation with your dentist can determine if you are a suitable individual for this procedure by carrying out an oral exam, including a shade assessment.

Do many people whiten their teeth?

More people than you might imagine. A bright sparkling smile can make a big difference for everyone.

          Is whitening safe?

Yes. Significant research and studies show that teeth whitening under dental supervision is completely safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. Zoom or any tooth whitening products are not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.

How long do the results last?

By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, and occasional maintenance with Zoom! Weekender or Nite White gel. These professional products will help keep your teeth looking their brightest, and are only available from your dentist.

How does the Zoom! In-office system work?

The Zoom! light activated whitening gel’s active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As the Hydrogen Peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching coloured substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. The Zoom! light aids in activating the hydrogen peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. Studies show that by using Zoom! gel with the appropriate Zoom! lamp, a colour improvement of 6-8 shades lighter can be expected.

What does a patient experience during the Zoom! In-Office Procedure?

The Marylebone Dentist has modern well-equipped surgery. During the procedure, patients may comfortably watch television or listen to music. Individuals with a strong gag reflex or anxiety may have difficulty undergoing the entire procedure.

How is exposure to the Zoom! light controlled?

The Zoom! procedure requires that all soft tissue in and around the mouth be protected. The dentist/nurse is required to monitor the procedure to insure any exposed skin or tissue is isolated and protected. Protective eyewear is required during the procedure.

Light sensitive individuals, including those undergoing PUVA therapy ( Psoralen+UV Radiation) or other photo chemotherapy, or patients with melanoma, should not undergo the Zoom! in-office procedure. Also, patients taking any light sensitive drugs or substances, whether over the counter, prescription or homeopathic, should consult their doctor prior to the procedure. Anyone who is not suitable for Zoom! chairside whitening may be able to have the Zoom! take-home kit.

How long does Zoom! Chairside Whitening take?

The procedure begins with a preparation period, which usually takes 30 mins, followed by 45 minutes of bleaching. A five-minute fluoride treatment completes the procedure. (If you have not had a professional clean in the last 6 months, it is usually recommended that you have a clean done before the procedure to ensure the gel reaches all parts of the teeth).

          Are there any side effects?

Sensitivity during the treatment may occur with some patients. The Zoom! light generates minimal heat which is the usual source of discomfort. On rare occasions, minor tingling sensations are experienced immediately after the procedure but always dissipate.

To make your whitening visit at NW Smiles more enjoyable you can watch TV or select a DVD, or you can listen to music.
